Good Learning

The Lord is the One who enables us to learn (Dan 1:17, LB). To some, He gives more ability to learn specific things than He does to others. Yet, we must keep making the choice to learn or we will regress in our knowledge (Prov 19:27, CEV). We are either progressing or regressing. He supplies the ability and desire but we must supply the effort (Phil 2:12-13).

A good teacher can help us learn. They will make learning enjoyable (Prov 15:2, LB). Ideally, we will take such delight in learning from them that it will nurture in us a love of learning on our own. We graduate to a place of eagerly pursuing our own education. This is part of what being a disciple is about. A disciple is a learner. Ideally, we can learn in so many ways throughout each day.

The good teacher also teaches us that knowledge should be related to right living.  Indeed, doing right often leads to our having greater insights (Prov 9:9, CEV).  This corresponds with what Jesus said in Jn 7:17 that doing God’s will sharpens our understanding and discernment. Not only is a disciple a learner but also a follower. True learning means doing the truth, following what we have learned. Apart from improved living, increased knowledge just makes us more guilty (Rom 2:5-8).
