Look For Ways To Be Helpful

There are many different forms of helping others (1 Cor 12:28, NRSV). We can use whatever skills we have to provide others with assistance (1 Cor 12:7). Maybe all they need is someone to listen, a place to spend the night, a hug, running an errand for them, some money, encouragement to take a risk, or showing we have hope for their future because we believe God will break through for them. Perhaps they just need a compliment, practical help to prepare them for more effective service, expressions of approval, a smile that says ‘I’m glad to see you,’ or a gift which would bring them joy but they wouldn’t get for themselves. It could also be the case that they merely need us to spend time with them, display kindness, express cheerfulness, ease their work load, or tell them we love and value them. Basically, we look around and think of how we could help (Rom 15:2, Message).

So often, we are overwhelmed by our own situations. As a result, instead of looking for how we can help, we don’t want to see the needs around us. We may feel that we can barely keep ourselves afloat – so why should I look for ways to expend time and energy on others? To be sure, there are times we may be able to offer less. Our focus is needed elsewhere. However, some of the time we probably could and should do more than we do. Opportunities come to do good but we miss many because we aren’t looking for them or don’t want to have to deal with the cost of helping (Lk 10:30-37).

God offers us timely help. Let us look to do good before the opportunities are missed. Furthermore, let’s keep alert to the means of help He may be sending us.
