Meekness Is Strength

As different translations of Mt 5:5 indicate, to be meek is to be humble-minded (AAT), gentle (NEB), claim nothing (Phillips), and be patient (AB). To be meek is to focus on our duties rather than on our rights. It means we accept God’s dealings with us without complaint or resistance, accepting His plans as being both good and wise (Mt 5:5, WSNT note). The meek are submissive (Mt 5:5, Worrell note). They are teachable (Ps 37:11, CW). Indeed, the meek have died to self-interest because their first priority is to please God (Ps 149:4, NBV note). Such individuals submit to His plan and leading.

The meek are courteous (1 Cor 4:13, GW). If we are meek, we don’t retaliate. We are gentle and have lost our aggressive, fiery nature toward others. We are patient and kind.

When we are meek, we possess the land which He has for us (Mt 5:5, AAT cf. Ps 37:11, NEB). Since we are submissive, we walk in His plans for us as His Spirit directs us. Lacking self-interest, we are content, put Him first, and see Him working in our lives (Jas 1:21, Message). Since it thrills God to know that His people are happy with Him (Ps 149:4, CW), He commands us, His humble ones who lack self-pride, to show our utter delight in Him through passionately expressive forms of worship like dancing, singing, and shouting for joy. Through such praise, He gives His humble people victory (Ps 149:4, CEV).
