Be Honest
God wants us to be completely honest (Ps 51:6, CEV) like Him (Rom 3:4, GW). It shows respect for the Lord (Prov 14:2, Message) and pleases Him (1 Chron 29:17, NEB). The need to be honest should guide our behavior (Prov 11:3, NCV) unless our honesty would result in someone’s death or unjustified harm (Ex 1:15-21; Jer 38:24-27).
What are some things that result from our being honest? Honesty promotes a clear conscience leading to peace and confident living (Prov 10:9, Message). We also grow spiritually when honesty is coupled with reception of truth (1 Pet 2:2, JB; Lk 8:15, ISV). Being honest is a sign of genuine friendship (Prov 24:26, TEV).
Further, honesty is a key to becoming intimate with the Lord (Ps 17:15, Harrison). The Lord prospers the honest (Prov 10:3, Knox). Very importantly, being honest allows us to be more aware of God’s presence (Ps 17:15, Harrison).
What works against our being honest? An attitude of pessimism or complaining undermines honesty (Phil 2:15, AAT) because we over-focus on the negative. Instead, we should see circumstances through the lenses of faith (Rom 8:28) and hope (Rom 12:12, Barclay). Fear of the consequences can work against our willingness to be honest. This is especially true if we are afraid of what others will think of us or how they will respond to us if we have done something that is likely to elicit their disapproval.
Let us be honest with God and others.
Christians should accept those whom God has accepted.
