The Humble Are Blessed And Joyful
Jesus exclaims that the poor in spirit are very happy (Matthew 5:3). Who are the poor in spirit? We are those who are humble, recognize our spiritual need and insignificance. We realize that we are unable to earn salvation because we are spiritually bankrupt. Hence, we don’t try to be good enough to merit eternal life. Instead, we throw ourselves on God’s mercy (Luke 18:13). As a result, we are spiritually satisfied and full of joy because the Lord has given us salvation. We are to be envied. Jesus’ verdict is that this is true whatever our circumstances may be.
Christ declares that the kingdom of God belongs to the humble. The kingdom is that realm in which God reigns. We humble individuals have the privilege of being increasingly brought under His rule – which is always what is best. His kingdom reign also consists of righteousness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17). Consequently, to partake of His righteousness, we graciously receive forgiveness of our sins, a legal standing of being declared righteous in Christ, adoption to be His child, a new nature by which we can progressively become more like Him in our behavior, the personal guidance He provides each one who obeys Him as King (Proverbs 3:5-6), and, in general, “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). The poor in spirit also partake of His kingdom’s peace – peace with God (Romans 5:1; 8:1) and inner peace (Philippians 4:6). His joy is also ours. We get to enjoy Him and experience life from the perspective of the happy God (1 Timothy 6:15, Rotherham) because we have been given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). How very happy are the humble who are poor in spirit!
