Humility Toward God & Others
Those who are humble express our meekness toward God and people. Toward the Lord, a meek person is humble and claims nothing. Being humble, we readily submit to God (Jas 4:6-7). We want His will to be done and trust that His way is best. We are not self-willed. Rather, because we are poor in spirit and mourn, we have abandoned attempts to strive for self-righteousness and now depend on Him. We commit all to the Lord (Psalm 34:5-11) and will face unfulfilled desire without complaint.
Toward people, the meek person is patient, longsuffering, and gentle (Eph 4:2). When wronged, we are forgiving instead of resentful. We are patient toward those who are annoying and don’t have to win against others (Rom 14:1). Yet, the meek are not spineless. We will fight hard for what is right and do our best when we are in competitive situations but we, in reliance on the Lord, leave the results of our God-directed efforts to Him.
The meek are strong because they are humble enough to be strong in Him and, as a result, strong toward others – strong enough to forgive, to not be depressed by others, and to be uncomplaining and gentle. As those who mourn, we also will stand up for what is right. This is strength in love. It is not mere raw power which can so easily wound.
