Weird Creatures In The Bible

The Bible seems to provide evidence for the existence of a wide variety of beings.  These include vampires (Isa 34:14, Knox and Moffatt; Prov 30:15, ASV), monsters (Isa 34:14, Douay, Moffatt, Knox), dragons and their offspring (Ps 91:13, LXX, JB, and Douay; Prov 23:32, YLT; Isa 14:29, JB and Knox; Isa 35:7, YLT; Isa 43:20, Spurrell), different types of giants (Dt 2:10-11, CW; Gen 10:9, LXX; Gen 6:4, TEV), goat-demons (Lev 17:7, CJB; Isa 13:21, NAB; Isa 34:14, Tanakh), and a certain type of female demon (Isa 34:14, Tanakh, JB, NJB, Message, and EVD; Job 18:15, JB). In addition, the Bible also arguably supports belief in ghosts (Dt 18:10, GW; Lev 19:31, NEB; Lev 20:27, Tanakh; 1 Sam 28:3, 7, Tanakh etc.) as well as the possible existence of various spirits (SS 3:5, NEB; SS 2:7, REB) who are either evil or perfectly good.

Creation is complex. There is so much testimony about the existence of the aforementioned creatures across cultures and throughout recorded history that we would be foolish to just dismiss it. Rather, we should be open to the possibility that creatures like vampires, monsters, fairies, werewolves, incubi, and ghosts exist. Saint Augustine said it would be impudent to not do so given so much credible testimony from personal experience.

We should also reconsider dressing up as some of these beings since they may well exist. After all, cultures have long had people who used masks and outfits to identify with the being they dressed up as. It was an acted request for that being to come to them and help them. Is this what we ought to be doing? We may say that is not our intent in dressing up but it provides a right to such creatures to get involved in our lives every bit as much as ‘innocent’ participation in occult activities gives the demonic a foothold to work in our life. We need to reconsider some of our beliefs about Halloween and the nature of the invisible world.
