God-Approved Character
Character points to core aspects of who we are. For instance, the good or ideal wife of Prov 31 is described as having strength of character. From the depth of who she is, she reflects many of God’s good qualities (Prov 12:4, NBV note). Individuals with good character seek to know God’s will and do it (Phil 1:9-10, AAT with Col 4:12, Weymouth).
How do we develop God-approved character? We keep going through difficulties with joy, hope, and persevering faith (Rom 5:1-4), have godly people offer us constructive criticism (Prov 27:17, NET note), and avoid those people who don’t help build up good character (Prov 13:20). Growing in love will further develop good character (1 Cor 8:1, Letters of Paul by Bruce) as we rely not on our own resources (Jn 15:5; Col 2:7, TCNT) but on God’s resources (Phil 2:13). Having a mature Christian friend (Prov 27:17, CJB), praying for our character development, having others pray for our character (Col 4:12, Weymouth), being obedient (1 Pet 1:14, Phillips-2nd ed), and cooperating with God’s grace (Worrell note on 2 Pet 1:5-9; 1 Cor 15:10) are other important elements of developing good character.
What are some benefits of developing a God-approved character? Godly people will view us as being precious (Prov 31:10 and 25, CCB). We will better reflect God’s character when we are judged (Mt 22:14, CW with 2 Cor 5:10, AAT). God will polish our character with greater grace (Prov 4:9, Voice). Furthermore, we receive the Lord’s approval (EDBW, p 155-156).
Christians should accept those whom God has accepted.
