Work Your Assigned Field
A number of verses indicate that God appointed a particular person to do a certain task or, more generally, that He appoints specific tasks for each individual to do (Jn 3:27, NLT; 1 Cor 3:5, Voice cf. NCV; Eph 4:7, TCNT; 1 Cor 7:17, Norlie; Col 4:17, Phillips; Acts 22:10, Montgomery; 2 Cor 10:13-14, Moffatt; Jn 9:4, NLT; Gal 6:2, WSNT note). Every person has been given some specific obligation and each person is commanded to be in the place they are supposed to be at doing what the Lord has assigned them to do. Indeed, four passages tell of God’s judgment on those who did tasks which were wrong because God had not directed or authorized the individuals to do those tasks (Num 3:4 in NIV, CJB, NJB, TNIV; Num 26:61 in NIV, CJB, NJB, TNIV; Lev 10:1 in NJB and TNIV; Mt 7:23, NLT-1996).
Since the Lord has certain unique and specific things He has ordained for us to do, it follows that activity which He has not authorized for us is wrong. God has a ‘best’ for each of us. He wants us to do what He has appointed us to do – not what we have decided to ask Him to bless.
God has destined each person to a certain sphere of activity within which they are to work. Of course, the best example of assigned tasks being given to an individual is Jesus. He did every detail of the specific assignment the Father had given Him (Jn 5:19, 30; 6:38-39; 17:4; 14:31, Message).
